April in books

Yeaaah, I knew this was going to happen... April was reading slump month. Nothing felt interesting enough, and I only managed to read 3 because the Bolitho books are super fast reads. But let's to it:

Midshipman Bolitho and the Avenger, Alexander Kent

Still reads very middle-grade, actions scenes are either lacking or kinda confusing, but the detective-y part of the story was fun.

⭐⭐⭐

Darwin's Ghosts, Ariel Dorfman

This one was bonkers, and not in a fun way. I don't mind a bit of magical realism, but this book was so not it for me. The constant genre switching, random creepy-ish sexual references, and the absurd of it all put me off for most of the (endless) journey.

⭐⭐1⁄2

Band of Brothers, Alexander Kent

This could've been so good if it was a full 300ish pages book and not a (very) late addition to the first story. And again the action happening off-screen was such a let down, especially when it resulted in Dancer's death. Robbed, we were.

⭐⭐⭐

Onto my hall of shame (DNFs):
  • Pastoral, André Alexis - I was pretty sure I had put this one on my tbr because there was something interesting abt it but it's just... a bucolic book abt nothing happening, and it wasn't it for me
  • Gallant, V.E. Schwab - Yeah no, this is not the type of book for me either. I tried.
  • Vilão, V.E. Schwab - And yet I tried.
  • O Grande Mentecapto, Fernando Sabino - Started out good, had potential, but again with the type of humor I'm not into right now.
  • To the Lighthouse, Virginia Woolf - Look, I tried, even after finding it difficult to focus on the way it is written, but I decided I would ultimately gain nothing by continuing it.
